We exist because of potential

From NASA to ZPower to Riot Energy, the potential of silver-zinc batteries keeps our company pushing for success.

In the 1960s, NASA developed silver-zinc batteries for use in the Apollo program. They saw the potential of the technology. The batteries were powerful and posed no danger of combustion. This potential helped land the first humans on the moon. However, the batteries were big and had too short of a cycle life for rechargeable commercial applications.

Zinc Matrix Power, later renamed to ZPower, didn’t let the barriers stand in the way of commercialization. The company was founded in 1996 for one specific purpose: to unlock the potential of this powerful chemistry so the world could have better battery technology. More than 100 patents later, ZPower led the way in making silver-zinc batteries smaller and fully rechargeable. With its new microbatteries, the company opened a world of exciting new applications.

Riot Energy saw the potential in ZPower’s work and acquired its intellectual property and key assets in 2021. Today, we are excited to see the potential of silver-zinc unfold even further as we help revolutionize the Internet of Things with better power. Innovators are creating smart devices that are changing the world – making it healthier, safer, and more enjoyable. Riot Energy is proud to work alongside these innovators to enable them to power their IoT inventions into reality.
